I just came back from seeing a surprisingly enjoyable movie - Paprika. It's a Japanese animation (but I wouldn't necessarily call it Anime) film and it's visually an excellent film. The premise is there is this machine that is capable of using dreams to destroy people, and this woman - Paprika - has the ability to enter people's dreams to stop them from being destroyed. The story was really complex, and it was sometimes difficult to figure out if you were watching the "dream" world or the "real" world, but overall I enjoyed the movie. The visuals were incredible, as it mixed live action with computer with traditional animation, and they all blended really well. The music was also pretty cool, and I'm very tempted to purchase a song or two off iTunes. Regardless, I wholeheartedly recommend this movie. It was great to see on a Monday afternoon and really brightened up my evening.
In other Asia related news, I'm not going to Thailand at the end of this month anymore. Unfortunately the Atlanta-based group I was going with (*cough cough* you all know who it is) spent 3 times the alloted budget for the training and the intern (me) got axed to cut costs. In all honesty, I cannot say how relieved I am that I don't have to go because I was seriously NOT looking forward to it. It was going to be a really short trip, barely long enought to get over jetlag, and I wouldn't even be spending a weekend night in Bangkok - one of the world's coolest party cities. On top of everything, I would have been traveling over 20 hours both ways on the weekends surrounding the training, meaning that's two weekends of my summer that I would have waster AND one week that I wouldn't be getting paid at my internship here in San Francisco. So I'm really happy that I just got 2 weekends of my summer back, and that I don't have to waste my time at some lame ass (and in my opinion, completely unecessary and wasteful) training. I am, however, bummed that I don't get to see my friend Mim who lives in Bangkok, who is also one of my closest friends from undergrad. I'll just have to go back to Thailand on my own time.
What this does mean is that I will be here in San Francisco for Pride (which I would have missed had I gone to Asia) which apparently is one of the biggest street parties in the country. Pride kicks off this Thursday with the beginning of the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, which I have so awesomely scored two free tickets to one of the movies being played there. Coincidentally it's a Spanish film called El Calentito, so that will be an exciting date with a special someone come Monday.
But, I'm getting ahead of myself. This weekend I'm taking a quick trip down to San Diego to visiting Shannon, one of my core best friends from undergrad. So excited to see her, since it's been over a year since we've been together last. Also, unlike San Francisco, it's actually WARM in Southern California, so maybe I can get some beach time and a little sun. Hurray! I won't be a ghost all summer after all! As you can see, lots going on and I've only been here for a month! 3 more to go! Can't wait!
