Carbon Footprint

Living in arguably one of the most liberal of all US cities, I have made it a goal for myself to begin making a conscious effort to lower my carbon footprint. I've been doing my research and I'm realizing that it's all about the little things (like bringing a canvas bag with you to the grocery store). I was reading in Vanity Fair last month about this great website that helps you calculate your carbon footprint in the tons of CO2 I am individually responsible for per year.

Here is the link: CarbonFund.org

Apparently, I am responsibly for 14.8 tons of CO2 emissions each year, which is kind of disgusting when you think about it. I think most of it is from the amount of air travel I do which this year alone has already totaled to a whopping 38,608 miles!!! Crazy!

Anyway, check out the website and be a more conscientious consumer.

I was just talking to someone about this. Here's another one I've used in the past. This one is not specific to carbon. and I think the big things make the difference here. For example flights are huge and the fact that we live in the US knocks you down right from the beginning. The food is a huge part and almost no one gets the majority of their food locally (grown).

We too recently got a bag to bring home groceries. Even when I'm at the store and on my bike I find that I let them put everything in a plastic bag before I can think of it. And then I put the plastic bags in my panniers. Wasteful.

I'm glad we're trying.
